Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. Proactive people recognize that they are “response-able.” They don’t blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior.

Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power–you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person uses proactive language–I can, I will, I prefer, etc. A reactive person uses reactive language–I can’t, I have to, if only. Reactive people believe they are not responsible for what they say and do–they have no choice.

The Medici Effect

What are the rules of innovation?

  1. All new ideas are combinations of existing ideas
  2. Not all idea combinations are created equal
  3. More ideas lead to better ideas
  4. Plan for mistakes and failures
  5. Stick to your passions – it’s your best chance for success
  6. Step into the intersection – unleash an explosion of ideas

The Medici Effect

The Medici effect refers to a phenomenon that occurs when a number of talented, creative and productive people from different fields are brought together and are able to collaborate to create something innovative and new. The idea comes from a book by Frans Johansson by the same name. It draws on the history of the wealthy Medici family, whose patronage brought poets, philosophers, scientists, painters and other artisans from around Europe to Florence, Italy, between the 13th and 17th centuries. Bringing these talented people together and allowing them to collaborate is believed to have kicked off the Renaissance period, a period of human history marked by great innovation.

Jeffrey Krames

  • Don’t manage every excruciating detail
  • Involve everyone and welcome great ideas from everywhere

2. Get less formal

  • Brainstorm with colleagues and bosses
  • Hold more informal meetings
  • Consider a once-in-a-while informal get together

Feeling Good Today – Tim McMorris

Feeling Good Today

A brand new day is here, the sun lifts from it’s hiding place
And the light touches my eyes, and brings a smile up to my face
And the world is spinning slowly
I know today, is gonna be, a good day

I’m packing up my things, I’m going out now to explore
Cause there’s simply too much beauty, in the world, I can’t ignore
I want to, go and see great things
I’ve seen a little, but want to see, a little more

So I’ll take the things I have and hit the road
I’ll find adventure waiting in stories untold
Finding freedom every step along the way
Knowing joy and happiness are here to stay
I’m feeling good today
